Speaker Introduction

Dr. Louis Wong obtained his BSc (Earth Sciences) from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 1999. He completed his doctoral and post-doctoral studies with Prof. Herbert Einstein in Geotechnical Engineering at MIT. Before joining HKU, he was Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University. His experimental and numerical research seeks to improve understanding of how geomaterials deform, and to exploit these properties to benefit humankind and society. His current research focuses on thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling and application of AI techniques to geomechanics. He has published over 120 SCI-indexed papers (H-index = 48). He is ranked in the top 1% worldwide by citations in his research field (Engineering, Geological). Additional to a number of journal and conference paper awards and keynote lectures delivered in international conferences, he was awarded the Richard Wolters’ Prize (2014) by the International Association of Engineering Geology and Environment. He is Editor-in-Chief of Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment (BOEG).

Lecture Outline

Literature review is an important task in research. A critical evaluation of the materials helps identify what have been done and what have not yet done. The literature review in a research proposal or scientific publication should demonstrate the researchers’ awareness of the current state of the field, and there is a research gap that the researchers will address. It also helps the researchers justify how their new findings advance knowledge within a particular research field. In this presentation, a few examples within the domain of geomechanics will be described to illustrate how literature review were carried out which led to exciting findings. In some cases, the literature review opened up entirely new avenues for the study of geomechanics. The seminar is intended to be suitable to all levels of audience encompassing professors, researchers, post-graduate students and undergraduate students.
